The names on audio packaging — Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, 5.1, 7.1 — describe how sound is encoded and how many audio channels are involved. You don't need a degree in acoustics to understand them.

HDMI ARC

Audio Return Channel — a feature that lets a TV send audio to a soundbar or receiver over the same HDMI cable used for video. Eliminates the need for a separate optical audio cable.

HDMI eARC

Dolby Atmos

An object-based audio format developed by Dolby Laboratories that adds height channels to surround sound, placing audio above the listener as well as around them. Requires compatible content and hardware.

DTS:X

A competing object-based surround sound format to Dolby Atmos, offered by DTS. Like Atmos, it supports height audio channels and adapts to different speaker configurations.

Optical Audio (TOSLINK)

A digital audio connection that transmits sound via a fiber-optic cable. It supports stereo and standard 5.1 surround formats but cannot carry lossless or object-based audio like Dolby Atmos.

Bitstream / Pass-through

A TV audio output setting that sends the encoded audio signal directly to a soundbar or receiver for decoding, rather than converting it first. Required to receive Dolby Atmos or DTS:X from a TV.

Subwoofer

A dedicated speaker designed to reproduce low-frequency sounds (bass). In surround sound notation, the ".1" in "5.1" or "7.1" refers to the subwoofer channel.

Virtual Surround Sound

A digital signal processing technique used in soundbars to simulate multiple speaker positions using fewer physical drivers. It approximates surround sound without requiring separate rear speakers.

A 5.1 system means five speakers (front left, front right, center, rear left, rear right) plus one subwoofer for bass. A 7.1 system adds two additional surround speakers for a wider field. These numbers represent physical channels — meaning discrete speaker positions.

Dolby Atmos goes further by adding height channels, placing sound above you as well as around you. It can work through overhead speakers or through upward-firing drivers built into a soundbar. DTS:X is a competing format that achieves a similar effect. Whether you hear a real difference depends heavily on your room size and the content you're watching.

Most modern soundbars advertise "virtual surround" — they use digital signal processing to simulate surround channels from fewer physical speakers. It's a reasonable compromise in smaller rooms, though it differs from a true multi-speaker setup.

Putting It All Together: Practical Setup Principles

Match your ports before you buy. If you want Dolby Atmos over eARC, confirm that both your TV and soundbar (or receiver) have eARC-labeled HDMI ports — not just ARC. The labels look similar but behave very differently.

Your TV's audio output settings matter. Even with the right cable, many TVs default to a compressed audio format. Go into your TV's audio settings and look for options like "Bitstream" or "Pass-through" rather than "PCM" if you want the soundbar or receiver to handle decoding.

Not every HDMI port on a TV supports ARC or eARC. Most TVs designate only one port — often labeled HDMI 1 (ARC) or HDMI 2 (eARC) — for audio return.
