Preventive

A medication given regularly to stop a parasite from establishing an infection, rather than treating one that already exists.

Fecal exam

A diagnostic test where a small stool sample is examined under a microscope to detect the eggs or presence of intestinal parasites.

Larva (larvae)

The immature, early stage of a parasite's life cycle — the stage at which many preventives are most effective at stopping development.

Zoonotic

Describes a disease or parasite that can be transmitted between animals and humans, such as roundworms or certain tick-borne illnesses.

  • Fleas are fast-reproducing insects that cause intense itching, skin irritation, and allergic dermatitis. They can also transmit tapeworms and, in heavy infestations, cause anemia — particularly in young or small animals.
  • Ticks are external parasites that attach to skin and feed on blood. Beyond the discomfort they cause, ticks in many U.S. regions transmit serious illnesses including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis.
  • Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasitic worm transmitted exclusively by infected mosquitoes. It lodges in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing progressive damage. In dogs, advanced infection is life-threatening. Treatment exists but is intensive and expensive — prevention is far simpler.
  • Intestinal parasites — including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and giardia — live in the digestive tract and are shed through feces. Some, like roundworms and hookworms, are also transmissible to humans, making them a public health concern as well.

How Transmission Happens

Each parasite has its own route of entry, which is why no single product covers every threat.

  • Fleas jump onto pets from infested environments — other animals, yards, or even indoor spaces where eggs have hatched. Once on a host, a female flea can lay hundreds of eggs within days, rapidly escalating a small problem into a full household infestation.
  • Ticks don't jump or fly. They cling to tall grass or brush and transfer to a passing animal or person. Wooded areas and tall vegetation are prime tick habitat, but suburban lawns can also harbor them.
  • Heartworm larvae are deposited into the bloodstream during a mosquito bite. This makes geographic location relevant — areas with longer mosquito seasons carry higher risk — but no region in the contiguous U.S. is entirely free from risk.
  • Intestinal parasites are most commonly acquired through ingesting contaminated soil, water, feces, or infected prey animals. Puppies and kittens can also acquire roundworms and hookworms from their mothers before or shortly after birth.

Check Your Pet After Every Outdoor Trip

Run your hands through your pet's coat after walks in wooded or grassy areas, paying special attention to around the ears, between toes, and under the collar. Early removal of a tick — before it has fed for many hours — reduces the risk of disease transmission. Make it a quick habit rather than an occasional inspection.

How Prevention Is Structured

Veterinary parasite prevention typically combines a few different types of products administered on regular schedules. No single product covers every parasite, so a complete plan usually involves more than one.

Monthly oral or topical products are commonly used for flea and tick prevention in both dogs and cats. Some also include protection against certain intestinal parasites. Your veterinarian can recommend an appropriate option based on your pet's age, weight, and health status.

Heartworm preventives are administered monthly (oral, topical, or injectable) and work by eliminating immature larvae before they develop. Dogs should be tested for heartworm before starting or restarting a preventive, as giving a preventive to a dog with an active infection can carry risks — your vet will advise on timing and protocol.

Fecal exams help detect intestinal parasites not covered by other preventives. Most vets recommend them at least annually, or more often for pets with outdoor exposure or signs of digestive upset.

Never Use Dog Products on Cats
