Why Fluid Checks Are Worth Your Time
Most mechanical failures don't happen suddenly — they build up slowly from neglected basics. Fluids are your vehicle's circulatory system: they lubricate, cool, and transmit force throughout the drivetrain. When they run low, break down, or get contaminated, the damage compounds fast and repair costs climb steeply.

How to Check Each Fluid
Work through these checks in order, keeping your owner's manual handy. Reservoir locations vary by make and model — if you can't find something, the manual's engine diagram will show you exactly where to look. Gather your tools before you start.
Clean lint-free rags or paper towels
Wipe dipsticks and reservoir caps clean before and after checking fluid levels.
Flashlight or work light
Improves visibility under the hood, especially in dim garages or at night.
Vehicle owner's manual
Confirms correct fluid specifications, reservoir locations, and service intervals.
Nitrile gloves
Protects hands from brake fluid and coolant, which are corrosive or toxic.
Check engine oil
With the engine off and cool, locate the oil dipstick — typically a brightly colored ring or handle near the engine center. Pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, then pull it out again. The oil level should fall between the two marks at the bottom of the dipstick. Also note the oil's color: fresh oil is amber; very dark or gritty oil suggests it's due for a change.
Check coolant (antifreeze)
Find the translucent coolant reservoir, usually near the radiator. Without opening anything, read the level against the MIN and MAX markings on the outside of the tank. The fluid should be between those lines. Note the color — most coolants are green, orange, or pink depending on the formula your vehicle requires.
Check brake fluid
The brake fluid reservoir is a small translucent container on top of the master cylinder, usually near the firewall on the driver's side. Check the level through the reservoir walls — it should be between MIN and MAX. Brake fluid is typically clear to light yellow when fresh; dark brown fluid may indicate contamination and warrants professional inspection.
Check power steering fluid
Many newer vehicles use electric power steering and have no fluid to check — consult your owner's manual. If your car has hydraulic power steering, locate the reservoir (often labeled with a steering wheel icon) and check the level either with a built-in dipstick on the cap or against markings on the side. Level should be in the normal range; low fluid can cause stiff steering or pump damage.
Check transmission fluid
Automatic transmissions often have a dipstick (check with engine warm and running, in Park — but verify this in your manual, as procedures vary). Pull, wipe, reinsert, and read. The fluid should be at the full mark and appear pink or red. A burnt smell or very dark color suggests the fluid needs changing. Many modern vehicles have a sealed transmission with no dipstick — a dealer or mechanic must check those.
Check windshield washer fluid
The washer fluid reservoir is typically a blue-capped container. Look at the translucent tank to estimate the level, or simply top it off. Use a washer fluid rated for your climate — plain water can freeze and crack the reservoir in cold weather.
When to Call a Mechanic
If you find a fluid consistently low between checks, that points to a leak or internal consumption — not just normal use. A puddle under your parked car, or fluid that's dramatically discolored, warrants a professional inspection rather than simply topping off. Catching a small leak early is almost always less expensive than the repair it prevents.
Brake Fluid Loss Is Never Normal
Unlike oil, which burns off gradually in normal operation, brake fluid levels should stay relatively constant. A noticeably low brake fluid level can mean worn brake pads (which is expected and serviceable) — but it can also signal a leak in the brake system, which is a safety-critical issue. If the level is significantly low and your brakes feel soft or spongy, stop driving and have the vehicle inspected immediately.
Reading the Results and Knowing What's Normal
A small drop in oil level between checks is normal for many engines. Coolant and brake fluid levels can dip slightly as components wear or temperatures fluctuate. What you're watching for is a significant or recurring drop, unusual color, or a visible leak under the car.
Never Mix Fluid Types
Using the wrong coolant formula or brake fluid grade can damage seals, corrode components, or reduce effectiveness. Always check your owner's manual for the exact specification before adding any fluid. When in doubt, ask a certified mechanic rather than guessing.
